Louise Burke is an expert musician and rising star in the music industry. From her humble beginnings as a translator for international organizations to her success as a TV star and now musician, Burke has proven to be a force to be reckoned with. With her two latest singles, “Artist’s Rut” and “Benevolent not Malevolent,” Burke showcases her stunning vocals and storytelling abilities.

We would like to introduce you to Melina Hazewood, a prodigious 16-year-old pop star whose musical journey began before she was even born. With a powerful voice and a talent that runs in her blood, Melina has recently released her debut album, “So The Wind Blows,” featuring her empowering single “Powerful,” which was released when she was just 15 years old. Melina’s sound has been compared to the likes of Adele, but her influences go beyond the contemporary artists of today.

In her own words, it is “a song about the universal power of women” that brings us all together to remind us of our worth and uniqueness. It is not about women being better than men, but rather about striving for equality and acknowledging the capabilities of women. Melina also believes that men should find their own inner strength as well. 

The music video for “Powerful,” which was released on March 18th, perfectly captures the essence of the song. Shot in timeless black and white, the video showcases Melina’s on-screen presence as she sings and explores the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris, surrounded by the Queens of France. Born near Paris to a French mother and English father, Melina has a diverse background and influences from both countries. She recently made waves in France by participating in The Golden Voices International Singing Contest in Cannes, where she won the awards for Best Singer-Songwriter and Coup de Coeur du Jury. This week I have something a little different to a new release announcement and something that some of you may want to get involved in. Have you heard of Her Songs For Him – Songwriting Camp? Her Songs For Him Songwriting Camp is the first songwriting camp for female only and non binary songwriters and has a powerful motive behind its organisation.

Aiming to tackle gender equality issues in the music business, Her Songs For Him created by Organisation SLAS are creating a safe space for female and non-binary songwriters, producers and artists to come together and write. While creating a space that these creatives can meet new people, organisation SLAS are also aiming to highlight these brilliant talents.

Why is Her Songs For Him needed? At a time where pop music has never been so popular and dominant in the music business, it is important for every songwriter to be credited and the industry to be accessible to all. Recent studies have shown that less than 30% female songwriters are working on the most popular hits and some are even being missed from the credits.

Hosted in Sweden for five days, the attendees are able to work closely with one another and have studio time with a producer, songwriter and artists in every room. With both songwriting camps resulting in an average of 25 songs completed, the camp is a hub of activity and creativity. Hey readers of Drawn From The Roots! I have an exciting event to share with you that is making big waves in the music industry. Introducing Her Songs For Him – Songwriting Camp, the first ever songwriting camp where only female and non-binary songwriters and producers.

Her Songs For Him are proudly making changes towards gender equality in the music business, starting with an all female and non-binary writing camp where songwriters, artists and producers from across the globe can join and create together in a safe space. The songwriting camp lasts for five days and is hosted in Sweden. With outstanding reviews from the attendees, Her Songs For Him Songwriting Camp is likely to be one of the leading events to bring awareness to gender equality within popular music songwriting. 

Created by six successful women that are working in different areas of the music industry, Organisation SLAS are determined to bring awareness to the unbalance in songwriter crediting while simultaneously highlighting talented female songwriters and producers. A 2012 to 2020 study that was led by USC Annenberg examined 900 popular songs looking for the percentage ratio of gender on those who worked, created and were credited for the materials. The results show that most female artists are below 30% while male artists are above 70% at all times.

Aiming to inspire other people to do similar initiatives and create events to include female songwriters, Her Songs For Him Songwriting Camp is aiming to open its doors to as many songwriters as possible.

While unearthing the ugliness of the act of obsession in her raw lyrical writing, the video beautifully contrasts the meaning of the song with its uplifting backdrops to create a powerful pairing.

To match the dominant energy of the song, Vesta will be proudly waving the independent artists flag for all to see as the video is self released and directed. The video features a selection of different coloured backdrops, creating a neutral base to shine attention on Vesta’s performance. While authentically expressing the emotion of the song, Vesta reenacts the lyrics clearly demonstrating the storytelling the song deserves. 

Making her stamp on modern RnB, Vestas sweetly toned and softly delivered vocals adds contrast to her raw and emotional wording. Each melody line appears to follow a simple pattern but matched with effortless rhymes in the lyric writing makes Obsessed a soothing but captivating listening experience. “A lot of the songs are about mortality, and this sense of transcendence that collides with the everyday mundane. This is particularly influenced by my work with Jewish philosopher Lévinas and French philosopher Ricœur.”
