J Carlyle’s new single ‘Intruder Alert’, released February 5th, has already accumulated huge amounts of praise from listeners and critics alike, with BBC Introducing dubbing the track an “Absolute Banger”!

J has been involved in the musical scene since the young age of 15, when he started writing his own songs in-line with a few of the different genres he enjoyed. The influences of these genres have stuck with J as he has begun to release his own music – dancehall, R&B and grime to name a few! Incorporating these styles into his own creations has lead to J feeling as though he’s finally found his place within music, releasing tracks that he was born to make and put out into the world.

However, the influences of genres he grew up around aren’t the only thing that can be clearly heard through his music. J has such a positive outlook on life that he’s now bringing to his music as his tracks ooze positive vibes and feel-good tempos, something that is influenced from his everyday life and career paths. Over the course of 10 years J worked within a mental health institution in the East Midlands, and since then he’s been a huge advocate for mental health, which is something he’s incorporated into his music. His previous encounters and experiences prompted him to make change within the community, helping others to use music as an escape and release from their struggles.

“I myself have suffered with mental health issues also. This journey prompted me to work with Channel 4 and local council to create a music programme for the youth.” – J Carlyle.

Showcasing the positive, feel-good music he can produce, ‘Intruder Alert’ offers a catchy chorus and upbeat tempo that you can’t help but want to dance to. That beat, paired with relatable lyrics touching up on struggles with the current age of social media, finds you listening to the track on repeat all day and never getting bored – which is something that’s quite rare!

You can listen to his track here.

With travel restrictions in place for the last 12 months our appetite for new experiences, places and people has grown immensely.

The adventurer in us all has suffered greatly, leaving many down in the dumps and craving the joys of travel.

A shining light in all this doom and gloom, and our knights in shining armour, are the travel photographers sharing their works with the world.

Keeping our spirits high, travel photographers allow us to experience the wonders of the world through the lens of a camera.

Perhaps the best part of travel photography is the way it takes us around the globe in a matter of minutes. We can see art shows of Peru, the streetlights of Singapore and the zoos of Mumbai all whilst sitting at our desks.

If only real travel was so quick and easy!

Travel photography reminds us of all the incredible places we have yet to visit, and promises that one day we will.

And that day may not be as far away as we think, with the rapid vaccine rollout programme holiday bookings are beginning to surge for countries such as Greece who recently announced tourists will be allowed back into the country from mid-May.

The magic of travel photography is its ability to inspire that sense of adventure in you, to give you that itch for experience and appetite for discovery.

Summer Holidays, real ones we mean, may still be far away for many. But enjoying the works from travel photographers reminds us why the wait will truly be worth it.

Let’s make one thing clear, I’m sure we would all much rather be getting on that plane ourselves, eating sub-par aeroplane food while we’re flown to a new destination.

But, in the meantime, travel photography is the next best thing.

The art of photography has both benefitted and suffered since everyone has their own camera in their back pocket. Yes, more people are taking photos than ever but the artistry and skill is largely, put politely, rather lacking. Lockdown has seen us suffer in many ways, ways we would almost certainly never have expected. The simplest things such as the hustle and bustle of your local high street and the oddness, quirkiness and joy of everyday life has been stifled and we find ourselves now missing what we foolishly took for granted. Not so photographer David Hicks, whose skill in capturing transient, fleeting moments of humans and their impact on the world around them shows not just the artistry of the medium but also its importance to our psyche and morale.

There’s a particular gallery which caught our attention, entitled ‘Waiting for Something to Happen’ (perhaps in retrospect it should be ‘if only we knew something was going to happen’). Across a series of black and white images, the streets of Stockholm (though it could feasibly be anywhere) show people lost in the moment, not seeming to have any plans or any direction…simply existing, as if waiting for the Universe to give them a nudge. David captions the images with a line that feels incredibly pertinent now: “There was the promise of events but none seemed to ever happen. So, people waited together…patiently”.

David Hicks’ combination of not only using the photographic image as artwork, with the framing, movement, structure and themes drawing us in but also as living photojournalism, documenting the world around us and giving us a glimpse at those things that often simply becomes wallpaper and background noise is truly important. In lockdown, the opportunity to savour even the seemingly mundane activity of people around us feels like a luxury. To make the most of each moment, sometimes you need to be reminded that there was even a moment there to experience and photography helps us do that — preserving moments in time which are so easily lost and as we find to our cost, so easily missed.

Science and Art, at surface value, may be taken as polar opposites.

Physics is a precise, complex and heavily numerical subject. Art however is expressive, a show of human creativity and emotion.

With the rapid approach of British Science Week (5th March-12th March 2021) I began to consider just how different the two were. When you delve a little deeper, you’ll be surprised to find actually how much the two really do have in common.

British Science Week champions the innovation of the sciences and their immensely progressive nature. Both Physics and Art also require that innovation, a bravery to think beyond what is known and discover the new, the exciting.

Science is an attempt to explain the world around us, and art is an attempt to express and interpret the world around us. When you examine the two closely, their paths greatly intersect.

And I’m not the only one to reach this conclusion! Artwork Abode put it best, ‘Though these subjects and methods have different traditions, and the intended audiences are different, in many cases, their basic motivations and goals are fundamentally the same.’

But what is most interesting, is when the two come together. There is something truly unexpected and magical about art that is inspired by or incorporating the sciences.

Take contemporary artist Dmitry’s ‘Physics of Emotion’ , an artist who also has a scientific background. The contrast between Dmitry’s fluid paint brush strokes at the calculated structure of formulas does in fact have a formulated scientific approach, which works seamlessly.

Physics of emotions #1 (Acrylic & oil pencil on canvas, 2021, 60x80x2cm.)

Incorporating the world of physics into his art Dmitry provides a sense of appreciation for the beauty within the scientific field.

No longer the fear-inducing formulas that stumped us on our GCSE papers, but something to marvel at, something to appreciate – we really should use art and science so much more in our overall education – these supposed extremes really do complement each other..

I love that these two worlds collide and I hope artists continue to find inspiration in the seemingly strangest of places.

This type of feel-good energy is exactly what is needed to get through the rest of the pandemic!

The lead single from the EP, Pon di Floor, was released on February 26th – which you can listen to here. Pon di Floor is the perfect teaser for what the rest of Bashment SZN will bring, giving you a taste of the high energy, uptempo style that’ll leave you wanting more!

Whilst his EP caters to many different genres, Lexxicon believes one in particular shines out the most, as he says “I am so excited about this EP because it feels like something Beenie Man would make if he was musically reborn in my generation, anyone that loved 90’s dancehall is gonna love this EP“.”

You can have a listen to the EP for yourself on April 7th, but in the meantime make sure to follow Lexxicon on…

Dmitry is an honest and passionate artist who truly believes that art can help us to create positive and powerful emotions. When we sit in front of a piece of art that magically captures our attention it can ignite so many different emotions translated from the artist to us. The German Expressionist Kandinsky reminded us how ‘The artist must train not only his eye but also his soul’ and Dmitry’s work seems to emanate from these precise thoughts.

Projects in the collection range imaginatively from ‘Flavours’ to ‘Dreaming’ to ‘Solitude’, ‘Love’ and ‘Motivation’. Dmitry’s combination of vibrant colours and textures not only inspire our emotions but also lead us to evaluate and interpret what we will of the paintings. Dmitry tells us ‘Whatever chaos you have around you it is crucial to find the way of self-organisation’ and certainly after the year we have all had this is sound advice. In the chaos of ‘Feeling’s’ is a strong, bold red heart seems to rise triumphant from the chaos – Yes! That is what we all need – the power of emotional art!

British Neo- Soul R&B artist Kiké teases brand new single, dropping Jan 15. A perfect wasy to spend this dreary national lockdown, with some brilliant harmonies, smooth vocals and a whole lot of feminine energy!

The new single – Queen – is a chilled out neo-soul track all about being at one with yourself and your womanhood. Taking inspiration from legends such as Jill Scott, Eryka Badu and Lianne Le Havas, the single delves into luxurious layered vocal harmonies, any fan of neo-soul can appreciate, and any new fan can be taken aback by the sheer beauty of the song.

Based in Manchester, Kiké fuses old school themes with a new twist, putting her own flair on every track she features on. Her first single was a slow, soulful jam – Start Over, flinging herself into the beautiful world of neo-soul, releasing her previous single, Melanin, the flair is clear, and carries through all of the creations. You can take a listen to Melanin below!

With many successful collaborations behind her, Inc..
