Making Magic Accessible for All: How to Plan a Sensory-Friendly Christmas Party

Published

on

With the holiday season fast approaching, it’s important to make sure that all children can fully participate in the merriment. Children with learning disabilities, complex sensory needs, or autism may struggle with the overwhelming stimulation and expectations of typical Christmas celebrations.

That’s why we’ve compiled a list of 10 tips to make your party accessible and enjoyable for everyone. First and foremost, creating a designated break-out space can be extremely beneficial for children who may need a quiet, calming space to regulate their emotions. It’s also helpful to have clear schedules and visual cues for any changes in the day’s activities.

Consider using warm, soft lighting instead of flashy decorations to create a more calming atmosphere. And remember to always ask before giving physical signs of affection, such as hugs or high fives. Many children with additional sensory needs benefit from stimming, or repetitive motions and sounds. Providing fidget toys or other objects can be a great way to help them self-regulate. It’s also important to communicate any surprises or changes in plans ahead of time to avoid overwhelming the child. When it comes to food, offering a taster plate for new and unfamiliar dishes can help children feel more comfortable trying something new. And don’t be offended if a child declines to eat a certain dish – they may have sensory sensitivities that make it difficult for them to eat certain foods.

Remember to be understanding and patient if a child has difficulty expressing their emotions or participating in traditional holiday activities. Allowing them the option to open presents at home or after the party can alleviate pressure to conform to social expectations. Overall, the key is to be open and accommodating to the needs of all children. With these 10 tips, you can ensure that your Christmas party is accessible and enjoyable for everyone. Here’s to a fantastic holiday season for all!
