Serving as a love letter to his wife as well as the lead single from his upcoming album, ‘Mykonos’ is a brilliant track that demonstrates fantastic command of vocals and guitar, with the two dovetailing together to give an intimate acoustic sound that is instantly appealing. The song also comes with an accompanying music video, which pairs Crabb’s music with a performance from contemporary dancer, Tess Howell, who performs in London’s Langdon Centre, with the venue chosen due to its association with the Downs Syndrome Association on behalf of the ‘Mykonos’ engineer, whose daughter is a performer with downs syndrome.

‘Mykonos’ is a teaser for Crabb’s full album ‘English American’, which is due to drop January 25^th. The album has been 20 years in the making, with a relationship with initial producer Steve Brown kicking off the project in the mid-90s. Crabb and Brown became close friends having both worked at Sony EMI together, and throughout this time, the recorded tracks that would later become the framework for ‘English American’. With immense talent within and behind the music, you simply cannot afford to miss Crabb’s debut album. However, unlike some artists, these guys have a different desire for their music.

“We want to prove that music is not about money, it’s about the passion of your life. I’m a closed person and making music and writing lyrics is a perfect way for me to communicate with people.

…It such a great pleasure to play live some songs which I created from the very beginning. There are a lot of ways to create music but all our songs start from an acoustic guitar and vocals” – Arsen.

With a nice little backstory to boot, I think it’s about time we give this single a closer look.

Now, at the beginning, I was freaked out. An eerie opening greets you like the start of ‘Thriller’ by Michael Jackson.

Like ‘Thriller’, the song soon had new life breathed into it and it certainly got going. To start, listeners are met by deep tones and a low beat from Arsen and the rest of the band. I wasn’t sure at the start of this one, but stick with me here.

It took my mind back to the early 00’s with the likes of Fall Out Boy running through my head. For the younger ones among us, I’d say they draw similarities to Imagine Dragons. To be fair the, likeness is uncanny. Has anyone seen Imagine Dragons and In Signs in the same room? Just saying…

The track has a real punchy tune, packed with some ferocious energy, making sure you sit up and listen. Every time there’s a high octane chorus or verse, a bassy guitar pulsates your eardrums getting your inner rocker ready.

It really makes me want to jump back in a mosh pit, undo my man bun and get head banging immediately. At the same time, I’d absolutely love to scream this song out from the bottom of my lungs.

Two thirds through, the track changes up slightly with a less heavy vibe. It gives us a different layer to the track, showing that the band aren’t just a one trick pony.

All in all, this is an incredibly professional track with a high quality finish that shines through.

In his debut album, the Thai-Chilean singer songwriter covers a vast array of themes from inclusivity to identity. Heavy hitting topics, but ones that he does justice:

‘As the project neared completion, I had felt like a weathered superhero amongst my own set of avenger accomplices; I had just felt so comfortable, confident and able. It wasn’t until I stepped out of the way of my own self; put my worries and anxieties aside to nurture my dreams that I felt able to feel an honest safety in myself and my people.’

Having been writing from the age of 10, Araya also uses music as a medium to comprehend and channel his emotions:

‘I think music has provided me a space to dissect my thoughts and experiences in an organic way that is lasting. The drafts of both my perspective and choices come to represent me and my journey’.

This view is something that is clear to see in his music as well, most notably in the album’s lead track ‘Color Palette’.

With a modern electronic vibe, Araya kicks things off in a truly up-to-date fashion. Comparable to the latest chart music from artists like Dave or The Weeknd, this is a tune the modern listener will really enjoy.

Personally, it’s not to my taste, but the craftsmanship in the production of this album is something to be admired. He uses a simple beat to allow the listener to focus on the lyrics, honing in on the themes and topics Araya covers.

For me, the most impressive part if this track is the bass. It gives the song a really strong foundation, allowing the lyrics to stand out from the music. Providing this opportunity to breathe means he can really get his point across.

Towards the end, the track changes style and allows the guitarist to really show what he’s made of. The groovy melody is a brilliant change from the hard-hitting, blunt beat we’d heard before. Not only does it adapt the style, but it allows a change of pace to end the song slowly rather than abruptly.

To top it off, the track finishes with a slow-mo version of the lyrics, adding yet another dimension to this multi-layered track. If this is anything to go by, then the album is sure to be a success.

Their new single ‘New Year’ encompasses the joy of having one another in our lives. Now, granted it might sound a little soppy, but it is a brilliant, heartfelt song.

The London based folk-pop duo are also a married couple. Like one half of ABBA or Stevie Nicks and Lindsey Buckingham, they’ve added their names to the list of songwriting couples. However, I’m sure this marriage is far stronger than the others in the list.

The pair draw on their backgrounds in classical music; their love of cheesy pop, classic rock and folk music. Don’t ask me how it works, but it definitely does. ‘New Year’ is the third single from this truly unique duo and it doesn’t disappoint.

As the tune begins, we’re greeted to some calm, relaxing acoustic guitar melodies performed by Toby. Immediately, you get the sense this song is one to really take in and listen to the meanings behind the lyrics.

With his soothing, rich voice Toby allows the listener to do just that. I’ve only ever heard one other singer with a similar style, making me wonder if Toby was the front man for Nizlopi on their hit single ‘JCB’ before he teamed up with Pip!

Admittedly, that might be a stretch, but if it’s true then I like him even more. Just to clarify, it has nothing to do with the fact I’m called Luke…..well, maybe a little.

Not to be outdone, Pip comes in with some brilliant harmonising tones, allowing their voices to bounce off one another.

The differentiating deep and high tones in the pair’s voices marry perfectly in the song, just like the acoustic guitar and ukulele combo. Again, don’t ask how it works, it just does.

My favourite part of the song has to be the lyrics themselves however. They’re incredibly heartfelt and definitely something any listener can relate to.

Coupled with the stripped back nature of the song, everything boils down to simple components and beautifully played stringed instruments. On the surface, this appears a very basic tune, but the interwoven meaning behind it elevates the track to something far more.
