Whether that be everyday activities on the streets of Cuba to the passionate and dynamic tango culture in Buenos Aries, Hicks will be there to experience it and share it. He says of his tango collection: “The Tango, a now-popular dance between a man and a woman, started in its current form in the mid-1800s, after a massive migration to Argentina, mostly by men. Because men outnumbered women by quite some number, the only way for a man to get close to a woman was via a brothel or by dance. The men practiced together, as you’d have to be a great dancer to get a woman’s attention. So, this very sexual dance you see now was born out of the reality for men in those old days. Nowadays, you see it performed often, usually on the street corners of Buenos Aires, with live musicians or a pre-recorded soundtrack, and they do it for the tips!”

With travel restrictions in place for the last 12 months our appetite for new experiences, places and people has grown immensely.

The adventurer in us all has suffered greatly, leaving many down in the dumps and craving the joys of travel.

A shining light in all this doom and gloom, and our knights in shining armour, are the travel photographers sharing their works with the world.

Keeping our spirits high, travel photographers allow us to experience the wonders of the world through the lens of a camera.

Perhaps the best part of travel photography is the way it takes us around the globe in a matter of minutes. We can see art shows of Peru, the streetlights of Singapore and the zoos of Mumbai all whilst sitting at our desks.

If only real travel was so quick and easy!

Travel photography reminds us of all the incredible places we have yet to visit, and promises that one day we will.

And that day may not be as far away as we think, with the rapid vaccine rollout programme holiday bookings are beginning to surge for countries such as Greece who recently announced tourists will be allowed back into the country from mid-May.

The magic of travel photography is its ability to inspire that sense of adventure in you, to give you that itch for experience and appetite for discovery.

Summer Holidays, real ones we mean, may still be far away for many. But enjoying the works from travel photographers reminds us why the wait will truly be worth it.

Let’s make one thing clear, I’m sure we would all much rather be getting on that plane ourselves, eating sub-par aeroplane food while we’re flown to a new destination.

But, in the meantime, travel photography is the next best thing.

There’s a particular gallery which caught our attention, entitled ‘Waiting for Something to Happen’ (perhaps in retrospect it should be ‘if only we knew something was going to happen’). Across a series of black and white images, the streets of Stockholm (though it could feasibly be anywhere) show people lost in the moment, not seeming to have any plans or any direction…simply existing, as if waiting for the Universe to give them a nudge. David captions the images with a line that feels incredibly pertinent now: “There was the promise of events but none seemed to ever happen. So, people waited together…patiently”.

David Hicks’ combination of not only using the photographic image as artwork, with the framing, movement, structure and themes drawing us in but also as living photojournalism, documenting the world around us and giving us a glimpse at those things that often simply becomes wallpaper and background noise is truly important. In lockdown, the opportunity to savour even the seemingly mundane activity of people around us feels like a luxury. To make the most of each moment, sometimes you need to be reminded that there was even a moment there to experience and photography helps us do that — preserving moments in time which are so easily lost and as we find to our cost, so easily missed.

Controversial Vogue cover by Tyler Mitchell, for December 2020 saw fan favourite and ex-One Direction star Harry Style donning a rather frilly dress. Love it or hate it, the cover certainly made its mark; sparking the
heated debate of men and femininity.

Many criticised, chastised and shamed Styles for his feminine dress while others called it revolutionary, radical and ravishing.

I’m afraid in this piece you’ll find I side with the latter.
Like it or not the age of femininity is well and truly on its way.

Teen-icon Harry Styles is one of many male celebrities embracing the thrills of flowers, frills and femininity and looking good while they do it.

My intense internet surf to find more men with frills and flowers led me to photographer David Hicks’ image ‘Men With Flowers’, the gentlemen dressed in a ‘Call Me By Your Name’ South of France-esque fit, carrying a joyful bouquet of flowers was a true pleasure to stumble upon.

The photo had me pondering one question- This year why not gift the men in your world a beautiful bouquet?

After all, it certainly looks good on them. Give your boyfriends, husbands and partners the Harry Styles treatment, you might just love what you see.

Anyone can take a photo, perhaps not a good one, but with the wonders of modern technology the means to do so are widely available to all. Has this accessibility meant a loss in authenticity to the world of photography?

I would beg to differ. Whilst indeed anyone can take a photo, not everyone can capture the magic of a moment.

A photograph is more than the snapping of an iPhone camera, it is the snapshot of a single second that tells an entire story in just one frame.

Good photographs require depth, texture and genuine feeling; something the simple click of a button won’t give you.

Take the works of photojournalist David Hicks. Hicks captures fascinating imagery, full of the passion and vibrance, he makes his viewers see what isn’t there, we look through glass as if it were not there, but Hicks wants us to notice the glass, its marks and lines, to sharpen our vision through his lens. Benefiting from his wealth of travel across almost 100 countries to date, David Hicks’ images have a worldly and wondrous feel and appreciating that to be unique you must create something different, so Hicks created ‘Photomentary’, where he prints his photographs on the appropriate substrate for the project.

Heavily textured and layered images in Hicks’ Exhibition range from Taxi drivers reflections on vintage rear view mirrors to English Country Gardens photographs printed on distressed greenhouse glass. Obviously this technique cannot be used with all photographs but as a way of presenting photography in a truly unique way this works so well.

The successful photographer truly connects the viewer to the image, creating a curiosity and true sense of intrigue. A good photographer allows us to see the world through their eyes, for what could be more unique than that?

And therein lies the true magic of photography. A photographer whose lens becomes an extension of his vision, Hicks captures life beyond the camera, and brings us a perspective we may never experience again. To stand out in the crowd you need to be inventive and relevant to your subject matter, something a photographer like David Hicks manages very well.
