KEYS Return with Irresistible New Single “What Flavour?”

Published

Welsh psych-pop band KEYS are back with a fresh and dynamic release. Their latest single, What Flavour?, is out now via Libertino and marks an exciting new chapter in their musical journey. Unlike their previous work, this track draws inspiration from the raw, rhythmic energy of ESG, Liquid Liquid, and the early ‘80s post-disco underground. By blending these influences, KEYS have created a sound that feels both nostalgic and refreshingly original.

A Song Born from Playful Indecision

Every great song has a story, and What Flavour? is no exception. While on holiday in Tenby, frontman Matthew Evans found inspiration in a simple moment. His daughter, overwhelmed by the endless ice cream choices, asked, “What flavour?” That innocent question quickly turned into a spontaneous singalong. Eventually, the melody evolved into a fully realized track.

“As the song unfolds, it shifts from playful indecision to the agony of craving what someone else has,” Evans explains. “At the time, we were deep into disco and 99 Records bands, so everything came out upside down. It doesn’t sound like anything we’ve done before, and that’s exactly why we love it.”

The Sound of Restless Energy

Built around tight, hypnotic grooves and an escalating sense of unease, What Flavour? mirrors the genre-blurring creativity of early ‘80s New York. Back then, funk, punk, and dance music collided, creating a thrilling new underground scene. KEYS capture that restless spirit in a track that starts as a lighthearted singalong but soon transforms into something deeper—urgent, anxious, and impossible to ignore.

With its percussive drive and warped funk sensibilities, What Flavour? is more than just a new release. It’s a bold statement that proves KEYS are still evolving, still experimenting, and still hungry for the unexpected.
