No1 Reviews: Karen Ruimy Showcases ‘When Jazz Meets Flamenco’
Karen Ruimy is a lifestyle brand owner and a spiritual healer. She is also an undeniable flamenco dancer and jazz singer. Last night, she hosted her debut event, When Jazz Meets Flamenco to a full audience at Soho’s Phoneix Arts Club.
The venue was the perfect seductive environment for Ruimy to put on the show she’s been working on for so long and showcase her art.
Among the sea of recognisable guests was Strictly’s Shirley Ballas and businesswoman Caprice Bourett who all stunned in their respective outfits as they enjoyed the night out in London’s West End.
The event was split into two sections – a display of Ruimy’s handpicked jazz covers, and an intense flamenco routine where she was joined by a captivating professional dancer. Her band featured an array of exceptionally talented musicians, with one standout figure (who Ruimy gave a special mention to during her performance) almost stealing the show. Killing Joke’s Youth was one of Ruimy’s guitarists, and it was visible how much Ruimy appreciated his presence, with her declaring “how lucky [she] was” to have such an iconic figure playing for her.
(Youth has worked with many incredible musicians throughout his career, most notably Sir Paul McCartney. The pair appear together in the experimental The Fireman duo and have released three albums together.)
After an evening of flowing bubbly and Parisian-style canapés, the many guests looked relaxed and happy as they took in their luxurious surroundings. It was an evening of laughter, music, dancing, and enjoying the finer things in life – Ruimy even gifted her admirers with goody bags filled with luxury items from her lifestyle brand Kalmar. Of course, it was not complete without a copy of her ‘Black Coffee’ album.

Quirky twosome True Religion have released a summery new track called ‘Que Bonita’, alongside a music video. The song is an unusual fusion of house music and flamenco, that somehow works perfectly.
The single flows from flamenco to a heavy bass house track. Soaring vocals, with lyrics in both Spanish and English, discuss the beauty of dance and partying, and the sensuous euphoric feelings that they produce. Flamenco guitarist Juan Carmine lends his musical prowess to the track, providing a smooth Spanish guitar melody, meanwhile. vocalist Amy Gill is the female voice featured in ‘Que Bonita’. All this is layered over addictive beats to create a perfect summer anthem.
True Religion are an unusual pair, formed of a year old DJ and a 59 year old neuropsychologist. They take inspiration from a variety of sources, often emulating the sounds of artists like Peggy Gou, Bellaire and Solomun. The ethos of the band draws from the ideas of mindfulness, along with a focus on philosophy. They aim to infuse their music with their love of mindfulness and meditation, and how it has helped them progress in their lives. The members believe in an ethos of kindness, consciousness, friendship, and self improvement.
Their music can be described as a mixture of underground house and techno music, with both Spanish and English influences both in music and language. True Religion use a melding of genres to create their own singular spin that makes their music so memorable.
This new single has been release with a music video, directed by the talented Alexandra Iglesias. The ‘Que Bonita’ music video features popping summery visuals. The visuals make beautiful use of the quirky take on flamenco and summer style, with vivid pinks and yellows worn by the performers bursting out of the video. A beach setting accentuates the warm, summery feeling of the track.
