VIDEO FEATURE: Ghosts – Some Velvet Morning

A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one…

Some Velvet Morning have debuted the video for their 2021 single Ghosts. The band have announced that this is the first in a series of 3 video drops from the album, releasing weekly, to celebrate the new Vinyl launch of their album Rough Seas.

Like the track itself, the video for Ghosts is stripped back and boasts a confidently withheld style. Some Velvet Morning let the track itself take centre stage, opting to perform in a stylishly reserved environment. Warm lights wrap around the black-clad group as they conjure an immense swell, all from their simple environment.

Ghosts itself demonstrates the reasons why Some Velvet Morning have garnered the genre-crossing fan base they have. There’s an element of a country music spirit to Ghosts that mix with the group’s signature modern pop-rock sound. Perhaps the song’s most powerful trait though is (for lack of a better word) its hype!

The single maintains a delicate balance of confidently withheld soundscapes, with a rousing through line throughout built by whoops, hand claps, and guitar. There’s shades of The Chain but contextualized in a modern pop style.

It’s strange to think of it as a newer release as it feels like a classic already. My gut instinct is that you could play this down the pub and everyone would join in. It’s easy to see how Ghosts could become the next big sports anthem and its video provides the perfect opportunity to revisit it.
